10 Tips to Stay Focused While Working Out at Home
We all struggle to stay motivated to work out. There are so many things that get in the way – sleep, work, family obligations. Working out at home is a good way to fit in a quick workout, but even when you do get that workout in, it can be hard to stay focused enough to get the most out of it. You get distracted by the phone, the kids, or a business email. However, there are ways to maintain an at-home workout routine. Here are 10 tips to stay focused while working out at home.
1. Schedule your workouts in your calendar
Write it down! You’re much more likely to stick to your workout if it’s in your calendar. You won’t make other plans, because you already have that time scheduled to be dedicated to exercise.
It’s important to eat before a workout. Protein and complex carbs will help give you the energy you need to run, complete a yoga practice, or strength train. Try these 15 Best Energy Foods for Running or these 9 Workout Snacks for Quick Energy.
3. Follow a workout plan
It’s much easier to stay focused on an at-home workout if you’re following along with a video or a written workout plan. We have tons of SkinnyMs. workouts! Challenge yourself with this Ankle Weight Butt Lift Workout, this Abs, Butt, Legs Home Workout, or the Beginner’s Weekly Workout Plan.
4. Find the perfect playlist
A good workout playlist will help you keep your energy up and keep you excited about moving and exercising. Listen to music you love, but if you’re not sure how to create your own workout playlist, try one of ours. We have 50 Tunes to Help You Lose Weight Fast and Motivational Songs to Fuel Every Workout.
5. Focus on form
Pay attention to your form to make sure you’re exercising safely and to have something specific to focus on. Using a mirror can help you make sure you’re not straining your neck in planks or allowing your knees to go past your toes in squats.
6. Work out with a friend
Work out with a friend or spouse. You’ll hold each other accountable and be less likely to skip the workout if you know someone is coming over to sweat with you.
7. Use a fitness tracker
A fitness tracker will track your progress and motivate you to challenge yourself. If you see how many calories you’re burning or how close you are to passing your personal bests, you’ll want to keep going. There are tons of great fitness trackers out there, but we recommend the Best Fitness Trackers of 2016.
8. Change it up
Working out different muscle groups and following different workouts will keep you from getting bored. It will also keep your body from getting used to one workout. You need to change things up to keep your body working hard to build muscle and burn fat.
9. Plan your post-workout snack
A post-workout snack is just as important as a pre-workout snack. Plus, if you know you have a tasty treat waiting for you, you’ll want to get through the workout and enjoy your snack! You need protein to repair and build muscle and complex carbs to re-energize. Check out the Best & Worst Foods to Eat After a Workout.
10. Notice how exercise makes you feel
One of the best ways to stay motivated to exercise is to notice how you feel after a workout. Exercise gives you endorphins, which is why you’re often happy and energized after a good sweat. It’s also a great way to relieve stress. Even though a good workout might be tough to get through, it will leave you feeling good. Not only will that make you want to work out again the next day, but so will these tips to stay focused while working out!
